Some books make a lasting impact on the world, but many of them end up landing short of people’s expectations. <\/span><\/p>\n

As it turns out, many acclaimed novels are notably tricky to read, making them hard to finish. If you\u2019ve ever started a new read in anticipation, only to put the book down halfway and never finish it, you\u2019re not alone, and chances are your DNF (did not finish) list contains one of these famous tales. <\/span><\/p>\n

Especially in today’s day and age, reading and books are more accessible than ever, which is why not finishing books is more commonplace. Our attention spans are shorter with the growth of social media, but some books are simply just not finishable. <\/p>\n

1. Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand<\/span><\/h2>\n

In this apocalyptic version of the world, a woman named Dagny Taggart struggles to run a railroad during the war and chaos of the times. <\/span><\/p>\n

2. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien<\/span><\/h2>\n

The infamous fantasy trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the most beloved movie series and has even been adapted into a TV show, <\/span>The Rings of Power<\/span><\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n

With countless characters, mystic lands, and a complex plot, it can be a challenging read that\u2019s difficult to finish. <\/span><\/p>\n

3. Ulysses by James Joyce<\/span><\/h2>\n

This modernist novel is considered one of the great works of literature, and while highly regarded, it\u2019s also notoriously tricky to read. <\/span><\/p>\n

5. War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy <\/span><\/h2>\n

Set in Russia during Napoleon\u2019s invasion in 1812, War and Peace<\/em> follows three characters and their unique experiences during the war. <\/span><\/p>\n

6. Catch-22 by Joseph Heller<\/span><\/h2>\n

Since the story has a winding timeline that doesn\u2019t follow any particular order, it makes for a challenging read.<\/span><\/p>\n

7. Les Mis\u00e9rables by Victor Hugo<\/span><\/h2>\n

The historical novel tells the story of Jean Valjean, an escaped convict desperately pursuing freedom. It is a long book, and the historical references and scattered plot are demanding for any reader.<\/span><\/p>\n

8. Finnegan\u2019s Wake by James Joyce<\/span><\/h2>\n

As one of the most exceptional works of the twentieth century, Finnegan\u2019s Wake<\/em> is as hard to finish as noteworthy. <\/span><\/p>\n

9. The Whale by Herman Melville<\/span><\/h2>\n

10. The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer<\/span><\/h2>\n

11. The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner<\/span><\/h2>\n

14. Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes<\/span><\/h2>\n

17. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen<\/span><\/h2>\n

Many Native English speakers struggle to understand the book since it uses complex language from 1861 when it was published.<\/span><\/p>\n

20. The Castle by Franz Kafka<\/span><\/h2>\n

One of the main reasons The Castle<\/em> is notoriously hard to finish is that the novel still needs to be completed. It\u2019s about a character known as \u201cK\u201d who gets a job as a surveyor for the Lord of a castle and struggles to find them. <\/span><\/p>\n

The story is ambiguous and has no conclusion to satisfy the reader, which some readers struggle to get through.<\/span><\/p>\n

J.R.R. Tolkien may be most known for his series The Lord of the Rings<\/em>, but this prequel to the trilogy is just as memorable and worth the read if you\u2019re willing to commit to the story. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Hobbit<\/em> has several characters and mythical names that you\u2019ll need to keep track of throughout the story. Notably, this book was written for children, and while it is complex, it’s not as challenging as Tolkien’s other works. <\/span><\/p>\n

23. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne<\/span><\/h2>\n

While it is a piece of classic literature everyone should read at least once, it was written in 1849, and the language is tricky and intimidating.<\/span><\/p>\n

24. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger<\/span><\/h2>\n

This classic novel is about a teenage boy named Holden Caulfield who spends a weekend alone wandering New York City. <\/span><\/p>\n

Holden struggles with his morality and to find meaning and connection in the world. Some readers find Holden\u2019s excessive and chaotic thoughts challenging to understand.<\/span><\/p>\n
