You never see her face in the movie, and you only hear her voice momentarily as the voice of the lead character, Meg\u2019s ex-husband\u2019s girlfriend. It\u2019s a biopic that injects an entirely fictional, or \u201cimaginary,\u201d plot into the life of its subject, celebrated portrait photographer Diane Arbus (Kidman). The film centers on an imagined romance between Arbus and an upstairs neighbor as she begins to come into her own as a photographer. But it\u2019s not a standard affair, and her lover isn\u2019t ordinary. He has hypertrichosis, which causes an abnormal amount of hair to grow all over the body, like fur.\u00a0<em>Fur<\/em> isn\u2019t quite as strange a film as one might hope based on that premise. Based on the novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman,\u00a0<em>Practical Magic<\/em> centers on two sisters born into a lineage of witches in a Massachusetts town (but not Salem) and several moments in their lives, particularly the introduction of a romantic interest for one of them and their haunting by the villainous ex of the other. Kidman and Sandra Bullock play the sisters wonderfully, and there are delightful moments in the film when the two are playful with their magic and having fun with their aunts. But the plot about Kidman\u2019s violent lover and later ex is shockingly brutal. The romantic comedy scenes between Bullock and her love interest don\u2019t quite land, leaving the movie feeling like a group of disparate stories that might have been better served as individual movies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>24 \u2013 Moulin Rouge! The jukebox musical\u2019s story of a poet who falls in love with a cabaret actress while they work on a play together is told with so much frantic energy that it\u2019s difficult to catch your breath. That\u2019s part of what makes it so unique and beloved by many, but it leaves me behind in many sequences. But when it works, it works brilliantly, as in the first musical number with Kidman and Ewan McGregor and the tango rendition of The Police\u2019s \u201cRoxanne\u201d around the film\u2019s midpoint, securing it a spot on this list. But instead of simply focusing on his journey, it also shows what she experiences after he has gone, and the deserter-hunting Home Guard in the town becomes cruel with their power. It\u2019s a beautifully shot movie that leans into its melodrama to create something that feels like it could have been made in Classical Hollywood. Margot and her sister haven\u2019t talked in years because Margot is, to put it mildly, difficult. She is highly critical of those around her, makes passive-aggressive and aggressive-aggressive comments regularly, and generally thinks she\u2019s better than everyone around her. Or rather, manipulate the teenage boys in love with her to kill on her behalf. The film tracks her start from assistant to segment producer and host at a local TV station and her murderous turn when her husband begins to demand more of her time.
