For millions of parties now succeeding from a desk at home- rather than a desk in an office- the COVID pandemic “ve forced” them to ask one glaringly obvious question: Is it time to quit your job? <\/p>\n
A few years ago, the same thought went through my heading, and in dramatic fad, I quit my job. What followed was … a mess.<\/p>\n
So I’m here today to help you learn from my mistakes.<\/p>\n
The evidence is that more and more people are looking at this alternative. Between 2018 and the opening up of 2020, approximately 27 million Americans quit their full-time hassles to work for themselves<\/a>.<\/p>\n It wreak the total number of self-employed beings to 42 million( compared against approximately 126 million traditional full-time works ). <\/p>\n Although the official post-COVID anatomies are still not in, expect the trend to is not simply continue, but accelerate- rapidly.<\/p>\n My change to self-employment <\/p>\n I cleared the displacement to self-employment five years ago.<\/p>\n I’d provided as a police officer in the UK for 22 years and finally decided I’d had enough. What would I do differently if I was one of billions of beings cultivating from dwelling and thinking about switching to working for myself? <\/p>\n For anyone who’s thinking of constitute the change to self-employment, I want to share four instructions I’ve learned along the way.<\/p>\n 1. Don’t merely cease your job, organize! <\/p>\n I quit without a intention. That was not the best idea.<\/p>\n Working from dwelling is your chance to plan, research, strategize, and prepare for the switching to self-employment in advance.<\/p>\n First, take a long hard look at what abilities you do( and don’t) have that they are able to feasibly bill money for. Then, get absolutely clear on what type of day-to-day work activities energize and arouse you.<\/p>\n Many people can tolerate a occupation they’re not passionate about in exchange for stability and security.<\/p>\n When you work for yourself, that’s not a viable option in the short-run.<\/p>\n There are so many indecisions and challenges when you’re self-employed. You better be clear that you’re doing something that you love or you — and the people around you — is likely to be miserable.<\/p>\n 2. Work on that personal symbol NOW <\/p>\n It wasn’t until 2017 when I speak Mark Schaefer’s book KNOWN<\/a> As he clarified, it’s not who you know that truly weighs in business anymore … it’s who knows you that matters.<\/p>\n I already understood the dominance of using LinkedIn for networking and business, but after say Mark’s book, it became a commitment.<\/p>\n When I firstly started employing LinkedIn, I used it to look for possible clients. Now, I use it to let my possible patients find me. It’s a insidiou but important difference … and it works.<\/p>\n Being known in your industry, marketplace, or sector is vital to your success.<\/p>\n But when I quit my job, I didn’t know that.<\/p>\n And I didn’t understand better how much the people you know can influence your chances of successful self-employment either.<\/p>\n In fact, I had a HUGE challenge. For the eight years leading up to quitting my job, I’d spent significant occasion and endeavor working on NOT being known — I ran in covert knowledge! <\/p>\n If I had to do it all over again, I would have acted on the advice from Mark’s book and developed a personal brand long before I quit.<\/p>\n 3. Learn everything you can about sales and sell <\/p>\n No matter what you do, if you work for yourself, you’re in auctions and marketing.<\/p>\n This is absolutely fundamental to your success, or default, in self-employment. No clients equals no business.<\/p>\n I know plenty of self-employed beings( speaking from experience !) who are brilliant at the technological aspect of their business, they’re fail at effectively selling or selling themselves.<\/p>\n It’s amazing how many problems in business be done away with when your sales and marketing are running smoothly! <\/p>\n Marketing cannot be an afterthought. It ought to have roasted into the very fabric of your startup from the beginning.<\/p>\n 4. Accept your self-worth <\/p>\n As a self-employed businessperson, you don’t pay what other people think you’re worth. In the long-term, you pay what you think you’re worth.<\/p>\n If you don’t value your services or advice , no one else will.<\/p>\n I cannot stress this point enough.<\/p>\n Like countless people, I’ve fought with imposter syndrome<\/a> and low self-worth at times.<\/p>\n But I’ve too given to understand that, as Dr Ivan Joseph<\/a> explained in his fantastic TED Talk<\/a>, confidence is a skill you can practice and develop over time.<\/p>\n The more you believe in yourself, the more other people will too.<\/p>\n Discontinue your job. Seize the day! <\/p>\n The best time to start planning to be self-employed is now. It’s the ultimate in self-reliance and the ultimate democracy.
