\u201cGone With the Wind\u201d is gone no more \u2026 HBO Max<\/strong> is bringing back the 1939 classic but it\u2019ll do so by adding historical context and denouncing its racist depictions.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

The streaming platform made an about-face mere hours after announcing it would temporarily pull the film from its library. The move came after \u201c12 Years a Slave\u201d screenwriter John Ridley<\/strong> published an op-ed Tuesday in the Los Angeles Times calling for HBO Max to remove a film that puts slavery in a positive light, set in the pre-Civil War South.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

HBO Max announced late Tuesday night the original film will be brought back \u201cwith a discussion of its historical context and a denouncement\u201d of the depictions of slavery.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

HBO Max added, \u201c\u2018Gone With The Wind\u2019 is a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society.\u201d When the movie returns, it\u2019ll be \u201cpresented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

It\u2019s unclear exactly how the streaming service will add \u201ccontext.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

In his op-ed, Ridley wrote the film \u201cromanticizes the Confederacy in a way that continues to give legitimacy to the notion that the secessionist movement was something more, or better, or more noble than what it was \u2014 a bloody insurrection to maintain the \u2018right\u2019 to own, sell and buy human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

\u201cGone With the Wind\u201d won 8 Oscars \u2026 including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Hattie McDaniel<\/strong> would become the first Black winner \u2026 Best Supporting Actress for playing Scarlet\u2019s house servant, Mammy.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Even so, she was forced to sit separately from her costars at the Oscars ceremony \u2014 in the back of the room \u2014 due to segregation. So many levels of irony, it hurts.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
