{"id":246875,"date":"2020-03-19T08:04:24","date_gmt":"2020-03-19T13:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.etrafficlane.com\/60dollarmiracle\/70-cheap-vegan-meals-how-i-saved-300-mo-cutting-out-meat-how-you-can-do-it"},"modified":"2020-03-19T08:04:56","modified_gmt":"2020-03-19T13:04:56","slug":"70-cheap-vegan-meals-how-i-saved-300-mo-cutting-out-meat-how-you-can-do-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.etrafficlane.com\/60dollarmiracle\/70-cheap-vegan-meals-how-i-saved-300-mo-cutting-out-meat-how-you-can-do-it","title":{"rendered":"70 Cheap Vegan Meals: How I Saved $300\/mo Cutting out Meat (&amp; How You Can Do It!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"display: inline;\">, when people hear that you don\u2019t eat meat, one of the big questions they have is, isn\u2019t that expensive?\n<\/p>\n<p>Most people assume that eating a vegan diet has to be super expensive.<\/p>\n<p>Largely, that\u2019s due to the fact that most people think to eat a meat-free, dairy-free diet that they have to buy super expensive ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, that\u2019s not the case.<span id=\"more-14712\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Although two of my meals each week contain fish, the rest of them are entirely meat and dairy free.<\/p>\n<div readability=\"758.505731016\">\n<p>And switching to a vegan diet has actually <strong>saved me $300 each month<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<h2>Can Eating a Vegan Diet Save You Money?<span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_Eating_a_Vegan_Diet_Save_You_Money\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Yes, it totally can!<\/p>\n<p>As I said, I save about $300 a month eating a vegan diet.<\/p>\n<p>And, since I don\u2019t have kids, I\u2019m only buying food for two people, and my husband and I didn\u2019t eat that much meat to begin with.<\/p>\n<p>What I\u2019m saying is that if you have a larger family who are all looking to eat a more plant-based diet, or you ate meat for most of your meals before, then you could easily save $500 or more with this diet.<\/p>\n<p>And for college students, <a href=\"https:\/\/moneypantry.com\/cheap-foods-to-buy-when-broke\/\">buying cheap foods when you\u2019re broke<\/a> is at the top of their money saving list. And this diet will certainly help you save on food.<\/p>\n<p>But how?<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t vegans have to buy expensive substitutes and superfoods?<\/p>\n<p>Not really.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m going to level with you here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Switching out animal proteins for plant-based ones will save you money. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A pack of chicken at the supermarket costs more than its vegan counterpart.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Be Vegan on a Budget<span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Be_Vegan_on_a_Budget\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Before we get onto the list of meals, I\u2019m going to cover some tips on following a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/money.com\/vegetarians-save-money\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vegan diet when you\u2019re on a budget<\/a>. These tips have helped me to <a href=\"https:\/\/moneypantry.com\/save-money-on-groceries\/\">save money on my grocery bill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Plan your meals for the whole week<span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Plan_your_meals_for_the_whole_week\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>This is a great tip and the one that\u2019s saved me the most money.<\/p>\n<p>Each week, my husband and I sit down and make a list of meals we\u2019d like that week.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re not too strict with what we have on each particular day. Instead, we just write down seven dinners, seven lunches, etc. and then have the one we fancy on that particular day.<\/p>\n<p>Meal planning will save you money in a number of ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>You can use ingredients across multiple meals:<\/strong> So you can buy a large pack of tomatoes for example and you can use that in lots of different meals. This puts costs down a lot.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You don\u2019t waste as much food:<\/strong> When you know what meals you\u2019re going to eat, you don\u2019t buy food that you won\u2019t use. This means that you don\u2019t waste food. As they say, the most expensive food is the food you throw away. So, reducing waste can really save you money.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Stick with whole foods, rather than tons of meat-substitutes<span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stick_with_whole_foods_rather_than_tons_of_meat-substitutes\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>I know a lot of vegans and vegetarians who use lots of meat-substitutes in their diet.<\/p>\n<p>The thing is, these can be pretty pricey and often you don\u2019t need them.<\/p>\n<p>I use a meat substitute probably once a week or twice a week at the most.<\/p>\n<p>I use things like plant-based mince, chicken, and shawarma.<\/p>\n<p>(Of course, it is nice to use vegan substitutes in some meals and they aren\u2019t as expensive as you\u2019d think.)<\/p>\n<p>By limiting the number of meat-alternatives I used in my diet, I ensure that I\u2019m not eating a ton of processed food and that I\u2019m not increasing my grocery bill unnecessarily.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of eating these substitutes in every meal, I eat a lot of root vegetables, fruits, grains, and lentils. These are inexpensive, healthy, and versatile ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s these versatile basics that you want to stock up on, which brings me to my next point:<\/p>\n<h3>Stock up on the cheap versatile ingredients<span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stock_up_on_the_cheap_versatile_ingredients\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>I purchase items that I know I can use in various different meals. I know that it\u2019ll be able to use tomatoes in curries and in salsa. I know that I can buy a bag of lentils and use them for months in various dishes.<\/p>\n<p>Canned goods, like chickpeas, tomatoes and beans are often your friend.<\/p>\n<p>Also, you\u2019ll need plenty of fruits and vegetables. I\u2019ve found that root vegetables are awesome, as they tend to last well. This means that I can use them in a variety of meals throughout the week.<\/p>\n<p>Since they work well in soups, any ingredients, like potatoes and butternut squash that I have leftover can be used to make soup I can have for lunch.<\/p>\n<h3>Buy certain items in bulk<span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Buy_certain_items_in_bulk\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019d recommend buying anything you\u2019re going to use often in bulk.<\/p>\n<p>Staples like rice, lentils, and oats, are all great items to stock up on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Proceed with caution though with buying in bulk. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not every item needs to be bought in bulk, and foods can end up going to waste.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also found that while dried beans and legumes may be cheap to buy and you can get a huge bag of them at a low price, they\u2019re not particularly convenient.<\/p>\n<p>I got a bag of dried chickpeas once and you have to soak them overnight before you use them.<\/p>\n<p>I often forget to soak them. Or that day I just happen to fancy a meal with chickpeas, but I can\u2019t have it because I have to soak the chickpeas.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why I much prefer canned beans and legumes.<\/p>\n<p>Buy stuff in bulk if you\u2019re going to use it often, otherwise, just buy it as you need it. And always keep convenience in mind.<\/p>\n<h3>You\u2019ll find the need for dairy substitutes<span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Youll_find_the_need_for_dairy_substitutes\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>In many cuisines, you will find the need for dairy substitutes.<\/p>\n<p>To keep costs down, I\u2019d recommend you buy substitutes that you can use in multiple meals throughout the week.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you\u2019re going to buy vegan cheese for nachos, then make pizza that week too, and you\u2019ll be able to use the cheese across two meals.<\/p>\n<h3>Consider making your own substitutes<span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Consider_making_your_own_substitutes\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Nut butters and milks can be expensive, so consider making your own. I make my own vegan sour cream from cashews. There\u2019s a great recipe for cashew cream that you can check out <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ohsheglows.com\/2016\/03\/13\/cashew-sour-cream\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since some vegan substitutes are on the pricier side, consider making your own, as it could work out cheaper.<\/p>\n<h3>Certain cuisines are better than others<span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Certain_cuisines_are_better_than_others\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019m going to level with you here, if you enjoy curries and cuisines like Mexican, and Turkish, you\u2019re going to find eating a vegan diet on the cheap a whole lot easier.<\/p>\n<p>Many traditional and popular American dishes, like burgers, fried chicken and the like are not the cheapest to replicate on a vegan diet.<\/p>\n<p>If you want stuff like that (any dish where meat is a key player), you\u2019ll need to pay for lots of vegan substitutes, which aren\u2019t always the cheapest.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, since <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/the-food-habits-of-a-nation\/article3089973.ece\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">31% of Indians eat a vegetarian diet<\/a>, there are plenty of meat-free options to choose from within Indian cuisine.<\/p>\n<p>I have always loved Indian food anyway. But since I\u2019ve cut meat from my diet, it\u2019s even more of a staple come mealtime.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t have to buy any substitutes to make Indian meals.<\/p>\n<p>I can make curry with lentils, tofu, vegetables, and potatoes. No expensive meat substitutes are required.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also found the following cuisines can also be easily be tailored to fit a vegan diet:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mexican<\/li>\n<li>Ethiopian<\/li>\n<li>Turkish<\/li>\n<li>Chinese<\/li>\n<li>Thai<\/li>\n<li>Vietnamese<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, I\u2019m not saying you can\u2019t enjoy other cuisines, and stuff like vegan burgers \u2013 of course you can, and I\u2019ll include recipes for those recipes below too. But, I\u2019m just saying that certain cuisines definitely suit a plant-based diet better and are great if you\u2019re on a budget!<\/p>\n<h2>Cheap Vegan Meals<span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cheap_Vegan_Meals\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Okay, so now you know what types of foods will work well if you\u2019re plant-based and on a budget, and how exactly to plan out your <a href=\"https:\/\/moneypantry.com\/cheap-recipes-for-rent-week\/\">meals to save money<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, here are some awesome vegan meals that you can make that won\u2019t break the bank!<\/p>\n<h3>1. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rachelcarr.com\/madras-lentils\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lentil Madras<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Lentil_Madras\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Lentil madras is one of my favorite meals. It contains lots of spices that meld together beautifully. The addition of lentils gives the sauce more texture, just making this an awesome meal all-around. Lentils are super cheap, as are most of the ingredients in the list.<\/p>\n<p>You can make a batch of this to last you a couple of days as well.<\/p>\n<h3>2. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.knowyourproduce.com\/vegan-nachos-with-black-beans\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Black bean nachos<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Black_bean_nachos\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Black beans are super cheap, and they work really well in lots of Mexican dishes. One of my favorites is black bean nachos. Crunchy tortilla chips, guacamole, and Mexican black beans combine to make this a tasty dish with lots of different flavors and textures.<\/p>\n<h3>3. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/plantbasedcityliving.com\/vegan-burritos\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vegan burritos<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Vegan_burritos\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Like I said above, you may want to buy meat substitutes a couple of times a week. One of my favorite meals is plant mince burritos. Covered in chili lime sauce and hot sauce, with lots of salsa, lettuce and other vegetables inside, these burritos are a super tasty meal!<\/p>\n<h3>4. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brandnewvegan.com\/recipes\/soups\/best-damn-vegan-chili-ever\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vegan Texas Chili<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Vegan_Texas_Chili\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Chili is a hearty meal that always goes down well. Containing plenty of herbs and spices, like paprika and oregano, and lots of vegetables, this chili recipe boasts lots of flavors. If you\u2019re vegan you don\u2019t have to miss out, nor do you have to spend a lot of money to make a good chili!<\/p>\n<h3>5. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/veganinthefreezer.com\/easy-lentil-minestrone-soup\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Easy lentil minestrone soup<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Easy_lentil_minestrone_soup\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>This lentil minestrone soup is ideal if you\u2019re looking for something that\u2019s really simple to make. It tastes great too!<\/p>\n<h3>6. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vikalinka.com\/chickpea-and-butternut-squash-curry\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Butternut squash and chickpea korma<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Butternut_squash_and_chickpea_korma\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Although I love spicy food, korma is actually one of my favorite curries, despite it being one of the mildest curries out there.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019d think that a notoriously creamy dish may not work in a vegan diet.<\/p>\n<p>And you\u2019d be wrong. The yogurt or cream normally used to make a korma can easily be switched out for coconut milk.<\/p>\n<p>This is a filling, satisfying dish that you can make for little money.<\/p>\n<h3>7. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/veganinthefreezer.com\/chicken-fajitas\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fajitas with meatless chicken<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Fajitas_with_meatless_chicken\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>I have vegan fajitas all the time. They\u2019re so quick and easy to make, and they taste great too! Try out this recipe that includes lots of awesome ingredients, like oregano, bell pepper, and chili powder.<\/p>\n<h3>8. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tasty.co\/recipe\/meatless-sloppy-joes\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Meatless Sloppy Joe\u2019s<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_Meatless_Sloppy_Joes\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Since a plant-based diet is so healthy, many people start to crave stodgy comfort foods, and what screams comfort food more than sloppy joes?<\/p>\n<p>You can still enjoy comfort food on a plant-based diet, and it doesn\u2019t have to cost you a lot of money.<\/p>\n<p>For this, you will need a substitute for the mince, but those aren\u2019t as expensive as buying meat. And the rest of the ingredients used to make these awesome sloppy Joe\u2019s are pretty cheap.<\/p>\n<h3>9. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thespruceeats.com\/simple-marinara-tomato-sauce-recipe-3377653\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spaghetti and marinara<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Spaghetti_and_marinara\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Italian food isn\u2019t always the easiest to make vegan. Don\u2019t worry though. If you\u2019re craving those Italian flavors, try making this simple tomato pasta dish.<\/p>\n<p>Tomato pasta is so cheap to make. For the sauce, you only need a few cheap ingredients<\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019re vegetarian, you can still top it with some mozzarella or parmesan.<\/p>\n<h3>10. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/veganinthefreezer.com\/garlic-alfredo-sauce\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roasted garlic alfredo sauce with fettuccine<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10_Roasted_garlic_alfredo_sauce_with_fettuccine\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>This recipe includes roasted garlic that makes for a super tasty plant-based alfredo sauce. Pour it over Fettucine pasta, and you have a really delicious meal.<\/p>\n<h3>11. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.onegreenplanet.org\/vegan-recipe\/mexican-pulled-jackfruit-tacos\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mexican pulled jackfruit tacos<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"11_Mexican_pulled_jackfruit_tacos\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019ve found that jackfruit is an awesome substitute for pulled pork. It\u2019s much cheaper too!<\/p>\n<p>These pulled jackfruit tacos have a great texture, thanks to the meaty texture of the jackfruit and the crunch of the taco, making this an awesome meal that won\u2019t break the bank.<\/p>\n<h3>12. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.onegreenplanet.org\/vegan-recipe\/crispy-potato-flautas-mexican-coleslaw\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Crispy Potato Flautas with Mexican coleslaw<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"12_Crispy_Potato_Flautas_with_Mexican_coleslaw\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Potato Flautas are one of my favorite foods, as I love Mexican food and anything with potatoes!<\/p>\n<p>This meal is tasty and it will fill you up. The best part is that since it does just contain ingredients like potatoes, and tortillas and the fixings for salsa, it\u2019s pretty inexpensive to make.<\/p>\n<p>Check out the plant-based version of this awesome dish through the link above.<\/p>\n<h3>13. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/plantbasedcityliving.com\/vegan-miso-soup\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miso soup<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"13_Miso_soup\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>I love miso soup, and it makes for a great, quick and easy lunch. This one contains a handful of ingredients, like onions, miso paste, and mushrooms, so it\u2019s super cheap to make.<\/p>\n<h3>14. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/plantbasedcityliving.com\/vegan-shepherds-pie\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vegan Shepherd\u2019s Pie<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"14_Vegan_Shepherds_Pie\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for comfort food, take a look at this vegan shepherd\u2019s pie recipe.<\/p>\n<p>Lentils make an awesome meat substitute in this meal. There\u2019s also plenty of vegetables, from carrots to celery, and fresh herbs, like rosemary and thyme that make this meal a filling and flavor-packed one. And, this shepherd\u2019s pie also contains miso paste, which if you make the recipe above, you\u2019ll already have in stock!<\/p>\n<h3>15. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/plantbasedcityliving.com\/carrot-turmeric-soup-with-cashew-cream-sauce\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carrot turmeric soup with cashew cream sauce<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"15_Carrot_turmeric_soup_with_cashew_cream_sauce\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>This recipe uses cashews to create a creamy soup that\u2019s awesome for lunch. I like using cashews because they are such a great substitute for cream (I like to use cashew cream as a substitute for sour cream!)<\/p>\n<p>Including carrots and turmeric, this meal offers plenty of important nutrients and health-boosting antioxidants.<\/p>\n<h3>16. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/plantbasedcityliving.com\/vegan-fettuccine-alfredo\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fettuccine alfredo<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"16_Fettuccine_alfredo\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Do you love pasta? You don\u2019t have to miss out when you\u2019re vegan. Like the soup above, this recipe includes cashews and almond milk that make for a creamy pasta.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, it\u2019s a tasty recipe that\u2019s great for families too.<\/p>\n<h3>17. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/plantbasedcityliving.com\/vegan-loaded-taco-fries\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Loaded taco fries<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"17_Loaded_taco_fries\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes, you want a light, healthy meal, and other times you just want comfort food!<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for a heartier meal, give these loaded taco fries a try. These use a textured vegetable protein as the meat substitute. I always like TVP, as it doesn\u2019t have as prominent a taste as other meat substitutes do, like tofu, for example.<\/p>\n<p>So, it works really well in lots of different meals, particularly in Mexican cuisine.<\/p>\n<p>These loaded taco fries include salsa, tomatoes, curly fries and lots of other tasty ingredients that make for a satisfying meal.<\/p>\n<h3>18. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frieddandelions.com\/sweet-and-sour-tofu\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sweet and sour tofu<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"18_Sweet_and_sour_tofu\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>I love sweet and sour tofu! The crispiness of the tofu mixed with the sweet and sour sauce makes for a super tasty meal!<\/p>\n<h3>19. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/veganinthefreezer.com\/stuffed-baguette-sandwich\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baguette sandwich with roasted peppers and onions<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"19_Baguette_sandwich_with_roasted_peppers_and_onions\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>This recipe uses roasted peppers to make a delicious stuffed baguette sandwich.<\/p>\n<h3>20. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/plantbasedcityliving.com\/roasted-sweet-potato-quesadillas\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roasted Sweet Potato Quesadillas<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"20_Roasted_Sweet_Potato_Quesadillas\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>These roasted sweet potato quesadillas include lots of nice spices, like cumin and cayenne pepper. In fact, it\u2019s anything but.<\/p>\n<p>Since you can\u2019t depend on the flavor of meat, vegan food often contains lots more spices, making it incredibly flavorsome.<\/p>\n<p>This Thai red curry coconut soup is an awesome example of that.<\/p>\n<p>I used to have a bowl of red Thai curry soup every time I went to this Thai <a href=\"https:\/\/moneypantry.com\/save-money-at-restaurants\/\">restaurant<\/a>. I loved that it had that perfect blend of creaminess and spiciness.
