Sort of like when you\u2019re watching Dark on Netflix, and you need subtitles because you can\u2019t understand German!<\/p>\n It generally only includes the dialogue.<\/p>\n So only the language of the video is displayed as text.<\/p>\n This means that with closed captions, you\u2019re having to include much more!<\/p>\n Subtitles are generally developed before the film or television show is released.<\/p>\n Offline CC is where you write captions for a video that\u2019s already been recorded. So, you can do this at your own pace.<\/p>\n Real-time captioning, as its name suggests, is where you create captions for something in real-time. This could be captions for a sports event, for example.<\/p>\n This makes it more demanding because you have to keep up with what\u2019s going on and can\u2019t work at your own pace as you can with offline captioning.<\/p>\n You can find both types of captioning gigs with the companies and websites below.<\/p>\n Okay, so now you know what closed captions are, how do you get a gig working as a captioner?<\/p>\n What are the requirements, and can anyone get started with it?<\/p>\n The main question you may have is\u2026<\/p>\n Yes, and no!<\/p>\n The good news is that there are many high paying jobs that don\u2019t require a college degree<\/a>.<\/p>\n That\u2019s always great because lots of people haven\u2019t been to college.<\/p>\n Yet many gigs just aren\u2019t accessible to those who aren\u2019t college-educated.<\/p>\n So, closed captioning is a good choice if you don\u2019t have a degree, because you will find some gigs where a degree isn\u2019t required.<\/p>\n Now, do note that I did say that there are many <\/em>jobs don\u2019t require a college education.<\/p>\n Real-time captioning gigs do often require a related degree and a lot of experience.<\/p>\n However, that\u2019s just one facet of captioning.<\/p>\n Live captioning is done in real time while the event is happening \u2013 as a court reporter would do for example.<\/p>\n Many jobs, however, involve prerecorded, or offline, captioning where the captioning is done after the event has taken place.<\/p>\n So, you\u2019re adding closed captions to videos that have already been completed.<\/p>\n These types of gigs often don\u2019t require you to have a degree or a ton of experience either.<\/p>\n The companies below offer both live-captioning and prerecorded captioning jobs.<\/p>\n How exactly do you become a closed captioner?<\/p>\n The main requirements are good typing skills<\/a> and listening skills of course.<\/p>\n Aside from that, the exact requirements are going to differ from place to place.<\/p>\n Check through the requirements of each job to ensure your skills and experience meet the criteria.<\/p>\n You\u2019ll also need to have the right equipment to get started, such as a:<\/p>\n There are tons of CC companies out there. The thing is that not all of them are currently offering jobs.<\/p>\n I\u2019m going to cover the best places to find work, but I\u2019m going to start with places that are advertising closed captioning jobs in 2020.<\/p>\n Rev is a great place to look for work, because it\u2019s easy for anyone to get started, and they\u2019re always advertising for captioners.<\/p>\n With the site, you get paid via PayPal<\/a> weekly\u00a0which is pretty awesome.<\/p>\n The site says that average earnings per month are $240. And the top monthly earnings are $1570.<\/p>\n All you need to get started with the company are strong English skills, a computer, and a dependable internet connection.<\/p>\n Next on our list is Aberdeen Broadcast Services. This company hires captioners.<\/p>\n Just check on the site\u2019s careers page, which I linked to above, to view current openings.<\/p>\n At the time of writing, there was an opening for a live real-time broadcast captioner. It says it\u2019s looking for real-time captioners who are trained and experienced in the CC industry.<\/p>\n It\u2019s a remote position, and you\u2019ll need to have a typing speed of 180 to 220 WPM, as well as lots of equipment, such as real-time closed captioning software, two computers, one for backup, three phone lines (one can be a cellphone if it works at home), and back-up internet.<\/p>\n There may be other captioning positions available, so do check the careers page for jobs.<\/p>\n Another place to check for work captioning is CaptioningStar. Unlike other platforms where you just search for opportunities, here you create a listing for the service you offer along with details and pricing.
