Henson<\/strong><\/a> in the Oscar-nominated film \u201cHidden Figures\u201d \u2014 has died.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"cb-f52cdd686b13f2a3aa914c71e917347f\" class=\"canvas-block canvas-block-permalink canvas-text-block canvas-text-block-permalink \" readability=\"33\">\n<p>NASA announced the pioneering figure died Monday. It was her groundbreaking math work that helped calculate the trajectories for <strong>Alan Shepard<\/strong>\u2018s history-making journey in space. She was also the one who gave the go-ahead for <strong>John Glenn<\/strong>\u2018s mission into orbit.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"cb-1b2e7a40dac23d78594b2e844ab53b1e\" class=\"canvas-block canvas-block-permalink canvas-text-block canvas-text-block-permalink \" readability=\"37\">\n<p>Johnson, who was initially rejected by NASA when she first applied, was tasked by Glenn to check the computer\u2019s work by redoing all the math done by a computer that had been programmed with the orbital equations that would control the trajectory of the capsule in Glenn\u2019s Friendship 7 mission.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"cb-43b2819d4425aaf272d577d5eb77654f\" class=\"canvas-block canvas-block-permalink canvas-text-block canvas-text-block-permalink \" readability=\"40\">\n<p>And, as part of the pre-flight checklist, Glenn asked engineers to \u201cget the girl\u201d to run the same numbers through the same equations that had been programmed into the computer \u2026 by hand. It earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/people\/octavia-spencer\/\"><strong>Octavia Spencer<\/strong><\/a> was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Johnson was honored at the 2017 Oscars.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"cb-5fb438cf2b3c68e9c0c744e27783d765\" class=\"canvas-block canvas-block-permalink canvas-text-block canvas-text-block-permalink \" readability=\"37\">\n<p>Johnson, who retired in 1986 from NASA, authored or co-authored 26 research projects. She recalled her greatest contribution to space exploration the calculations that helped with Project Apollo\u2019s Lunar Lander \u2014 the moon-orbiting Command Service Module.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"cb-76895ad3decc730c5ad21dff4d1f110f\" class=\"canvas-block canvas-block-permalink canvas-text-block canvas-text-block-permalink \" readability=\"41\">\n<p>She was born on August 26, 1918, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. She was famous before even her NASA days \u2026 she was one of 3 black students handpicked to integrate West Virginia\u2019s graduate school. Johnson graduated from West Virginia State College in 1937 \u2026 earning degrees in mathematics and French.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"cb-5434dcd157c665499f7a802e65ea5a2c\" class=\"canvas-block canvas-block-permalink canvas-text-block canvas-text-block-permalink \" readability=\"31\">\n<p>Johnson arrived at NASA before it was known by those letters. She started at NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) in 1953.
