Neil Peart <\/strong>from the band Rush \u2014 one of the greatest drummers in rock history \u2014 died Tuesday after battling cancer \u2026 according to his family.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n Peart passed away in Santa Monica. The family says he\u2019d been diagnosed with brain cancer 3 years ago, but hadn\u2019t announced it to Rush\u2019s legion of fans around the world.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n The Canadian rock trio of Rush formed in 1968, but Neil didn\u2019t join his bandmates \u2014 bassist Geddy Lee<\/strong><\/a> and guitarist Alex Lifeson<\/strong> \u2014 until 1974. All 3 men were known as virtuoso musicians and Neil\u2019s solo\u2019s are legendary \u2026 in particular his drumming on iconic songs like \u201cTom Sawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n His influence on today\u2019s rock musicians can\u2019t be overstated. If you, or your parents, were a drummer growing up in the 70s or 80s\u2026 you know about the endless hours amateurs spent trying to play like Neil.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n Sadly, he announced his retirement from the band in 2015 \u2014 he\u2019d been battling chronic pain related to tendinitis. They\u2019d been married for more than 20 years. He later remarried in 2000.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n He\u2019s survived by Carrie Peart<\/strong> and their 10-year-old daughter.
