John Witherspoon<\/strong><\/a>, who made his mark in comedy and in films like \u201cFriday\u201d has died.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Witherspoon\u2019s family announced he died suddenly Tuesday at his home in Sherman Oaks, California. The statement reads, \u201cIt is with deep sadness we have to tweet this, but our husband & father John Witherspoon has passed away.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

The statement continues, \u201cHe was a Legend in the entertainment industry, and a father figure to all who watched him over the years. We love you \u2018POPS\u2019 always & forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Witherspoon\u2019s career \u2014 which started in stand-up comedy \u2014 spanned for more than 5 decades, with his most notable role being Willie Jones, father of Ice Cube<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s character, Craig \u2026 in all of the \u201cFriday\u201d movies.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

John did voice work as Gramps on the animated series \u201cThe Boondocks,\u201d which is being revived for HBO. He also played Pops on \u201cThe Wayans Bros.\u201d and made appearances on \u201cThe Tracy Morgan Show\u201d and \u201cBlack Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/section>\n
