A Singleton family rep says he passed \u201cpeacefully, surrounded by his family and friends.\u201d The news comes more than a week after the famed director suffered a massive stroke. As we first reported \u2026 John\u2019s mom, Shelia Ward<\/strong>, filed legal docs<\/strong><\/a> asking the judge to appoint her temporary conservator because he was \u201cunable to properly provide for his personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.\u201d He had been in a coma in ICU at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A.<\/p>\n The \u201cBoyz n the Hood<\/strong>\u201d director suffered the stroke<\/strong><\/a>\u00a012 days ago after returning from Costa Rica and experiencing problems with his legs. He checked himself into Cedars where he suffered a stroke on April 17 in his hospital room.\u00a0<\/p>\n John directed 9 films \u2026 including \u201cPoetic Justice,\u201d \u201cHigher Learning,\u201d \u201cFour Brothers\u201d and \u201c2 Fast 2 Furious.\u201d He also has several high-profile producer credits to his name \u2026 including the critically acclaimed film \u201cHustle & Flow.\u201d He co-created the FX hit series \u201cSnowfall\u201d and directed episodes of \u201cThe People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story\u201d as well as \u201cEmpire\u201d and \u201cBillions.\u201d<\/p>\n John\u2019s burst to stardom came just 2 years after he graduated from USC. He was only 24 years old when he made his directorial debut \u2026 and the world noticed, earning him an Oscar nomination in 1992 for Best Director. He also earned a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.<\/p>\n He heavily guarded the project from start to finish \u2026 only allowing the \u2018Breakfast Club\u2019 director John Hughes<\/strong>\u00a0to read his script. Raised in South Central L.A. and coupled with the fact \u2018Boyz\u2019 was set in the same area \u2014 John refused to let anyone else direct his film.\u00a0<\/p>\n The move paid off \u2026 because in 2002 it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.<\/p>\n John\u2019s family said, \u201cLike many African Americans, Singleton quietly struggled with hypertension. More than 40% of African American men and women have high blood pressure, which also develops earlier in life and is usually more severe.
