R. Kelly<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0was so \u201coverwhelmed\u201d with his legal woes, he had no idea what the hell he was reading after he was served papers while in jail \u2026 much less know how to handle it in court and that\u2019s why he lost his sexual abuse case \u2026 so claims his lawyer who is fighting to undo the legal defeat.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll recall the embattled singer was sued by Heather Williams<\/strong> in Cook County, Illinois back in February \u2026 claiming Kelly sexually abused her<\/strong><\/a> when she was 16 years old. The lawsuit came on the heels of Kelly dealing with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Williams\u2019 attorney, Jeffrey Deutschman, initially fired off a legal letter in an effort to settle out of court. But, they got no response from Kelly\u2019s team so they forged ahead with the lawsuit. What\u2019s more \u2026 Williams said she tried serving Kelly at Trump Tower<\/a> <\/strong>but security made it mission impossible.<\/p>\n

Somehow, Williams served Kelly while he was in jail for\u00a0failing to pay child support<\/strong><\/a> \u2026 this according to Kelly\u2019s civil attorney, Brian Nix, who tells TMZ \u2026 \u201cR. Kelly was served while incarcerated on the child support case and he was overwhelmed by the experience of being in jail.\u201d When Kelly failed to appear for a hearing, Williams won a default judgment against the singer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nix says, \u201c[Being overwhelmed] coupled with Mr. Kelly not being cognizant of what the motion fully meant led to him missing the hearing. I had no idea he had been served.\u201d There\u2019s a hearing set for next month to determine damages.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kelly\u2019s lawyer is trying to get the default judgment set aside so they can fight it out in court on the merits.<\/p>\n
