Surf Rock Guitarist<\/span><\/p>\n Dick Dale Dead at 81<\/span><\/p>\n 3\/17\/2019 2:14 PM PDT<\/p>\n Exclusive Details<\/span><\/p>\n Dick passed away Saturday, according to Sam Bolle<\/strong>, Dick\u2019s live bassist. Sam tells TMZ, \u201cHe was an original, he always did things the way he wanted to do them \u2026 his own way. Long before punk rock, he was doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n A pioneer in music \u2014 who was known as the King of Surf Guitar \u2014 Dick spearheaded the surf rock sound that became globally popular through the Beach Boys and other bands in the \u201960s. He had tons of solo records and also performed with a group called the Del-Tones.<\/p>\n [youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Fwx2pephwKU&w=728&h=410]<\/p>\n Dick also made multiple TV appearances over the course of his career with performances on \u201cThe Ed Sullivan Show,\u201d\u00a0 \u201cHollywood a Go Go,\u201d \u201cLate Night with Conan O\u2019Brien,\u201d \u201cLate Show with David Letterman,\u201d \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d and others music-variety\/talk shows.<\/p>\n He also acted in quite a few TV shows and movies \u2014 often playing himself \u2014 including on projects like \u201cBeverly Hills, 90210,\u201d \u201cAn American Vampire Story,\u201d \u201cLet\u2019s Make Love,\u201d \u201cMuscle Beach Party,\u201d \u201cAloha, Scooby-Doo!\u201d and lots more.<\/p>\n [youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JQA0CJlfN3Y&w=728&h=410]<\/p>\n He released 11 LPs, 14 compilation and live albums, and had 11 singles over the course of his career. Oh, and every other surf rock band that ever existed \u2014 them too.<\/p>\n Dick has said he\u2019s dealt with a number of health issues over the years, including battling back from rectal cancer twice, dealing with diabetes as well as damaged vertebrae.
