CBS Records (now Sony Music) didn\u2019t make a concerted effort to woo the black pop marketplace until the early \u201970s, so its catalog of R&B and soul was fairly thin until the advent of Sly and the Philly Sound. But that\u2019s not to say its labels\u2013particularly OKeh\u2013didn\u2019t release some true classics of the genre pre-Family Stone. Just because the corporate powers that be allowed great protorockers such as the Treniers and Roy Hamilton to be largely ghettoized in the \u201950s is no excuse to miss them now. Or that you shouldn\u2019t hear balladeer Walter Jackson\u2019s towering, elegant, grateful-to-bursting \u201cMy Ship Is Comin\u2019 In\u201d (1967) due to the company\u2019s lousy promotion of the disc at the time<\/a>. Despite whatever sins are to be atoned for (including Sony\u2019s ego-tripping series Soundtrack to a Century<\/i>, this set\u2019s raison d\u2019\u00c3\u00aatre, From Doo-Wop to Hip Hop<\/i> does tickle one\u2019s historic imagination by bringing together raucous touchstones such as \u201cI Put a Spell on You\u201d (in its slightly snipped version) and \u201cBring the Noise\u201d and smooth ones such as \u201cMe and Mrs. Jones\u201d and \u201cPony.\u201d \u2013Rickey Wright<\/i><\/p>\n
