As You Were was recorded in two places. Greg Kurstin carried out all the devices on the 4 songs that he produced (“Wall Of Glass,” “Paper Crown,” “Come Back To Me” and the psychedelic whoosh of “It Doesn’t Have To Be That Way”), whereas Dan Grech-Marguerat produced the rest of the album at Snap! Studios in London.
The result’s precisely what you’d have hoped a Liam Gallagher solo album would sound like: the eagerness for the basic 60s/70s affect that he’s all the time had has been up to date for the right here and now. “I didn’t need to be reinventing something or going off on an area jazz odyssey,” says Gallagher. “It’s the Lennon ‘Cold Turkey’ vibe, The Stones, the classics. But finished my method, now.”
