Birthday freebies come in a few kinds: a treat at a chain, a beauty sample, store credit, movie popcorn and kids’ game time. This list of birthday freebies separates the 15 that cost nothing from the dozens that need a purchase, gives each one’s sign-up deadline and claim window, and shows why brands hand them out.
Key takeaways
- Really free: 15 of the 74 brands give a named item at no cost; 3 of those 15 (Starbucks, Jersey Mike’s, Auntie Anne’s) first want an earlier purchase on your account.
- Join early: Starbucks and Chuck E. Cheese cut off sign-ups 7 days before the birthday, and AMC wants an account about a month old.
- Claim fast: a Starbucks Green member’s drink and Burger King’s item last one day; Chipotle, Dutch Bros, Auntie Anne’s and Bath & Body Works give 30 days.
- Best haul: Sephora and Ulta give a gift in store with no purchase; online, Sephora wants a $25 order except on Kohls.com.
- Credit, not gifts: all 12 clothing, gift and pet programs in our table give money off, points or a gift that needs a purchase.
- Why they do it: Ulta’s rewards members bring about 95% of its sales, and Starbucks Rewards nearly 60% of its US company-operated revenue.
All 15 birthday freebies at a glance
Food and drink: 9 free birthday treats
Starbucks: a free drink or food item
Starbucks Rewards gives every member one free handcrafted drink, food item or bottled drink for their birthday. Joining is free from age 13, with a parent’s consent under 18.
The catch is in the terms: join at least seven days before your birthday, save the date in your account, and make one Star-earning purchase before the birthday each year. Green members must use the reward on the day itself. Gold members get 7 days and Reserve members 30.
Starbucks counts 35.8 million US members active in the 90 days to June 28, 2026. In the newest 1,000 Google Play reviews of its app (August 12 to October 12, 2026), 18 mention a birthday, and 14 of those describe a reward that never came or would not scan.
Worth it? Yes, if you buy one Starbucks drink a year anyway. Make that purchase well before the birthday.
Nothing Bundt Cakes: a free Bundtlet
Nothing Bundt Cakes gives a free Bundtlet, its single-serve cake, to members of its free Bundtastic Rewards program. Its FAQ names no purchase: you show the birthday email or app notice in a bakery.
The email arrives about a week before your birthday, and the offer runs until 7 days after it, so save your birthdate well ahead. The FAQ says members must be 18, while the program’s September 2026 terms say 16.
A KSTP-TV producer picked one up in St. Paul in November 2023, and a Los Angeles YouTuber got a red velvet one in early 2026 (her video is below).
Worth it? Yes: the cleanest no-purchase treat on this list, if a bakery is near you.
IHOP: a free stack of pancakes
IHOP’s free rewards program puts 5 PanCoins in your account on the first day of your birthday month, its rewards page says. Its FAQ says 5 PanCoins buy a coupon for a full stack of buttermilk pancakes, and 3 buy a short stack.
IHOP’s published wording names no purchase rule or expiry date for the coupon. Check its terms in the app before you go.
Worth it? Yes for pancake fans: the coins arrive at the start of the month, so you are not tied to one day.
Burger King: a Whopper Jr. or five other picks
Royal Perks, Burger King’s free rewards program, gives members a choice of a Whopper Jr., Original Chicken Sandwich, cheeseburger, 8-piece Chicken Fries, a soft-serve cup or cone, or a seasonal item. Members also earn double Crowns all birthday month.
The free item is good on the day of your birthday only. A Food & Wine writer ranked it second of the six chain freebies he collected in one August 2026 day.
Worth it? Yes, if you can reach a Burger King on the day itself.
Dutch Bros: a free drink
Dutch Rewards loads a free drink on the day of your birthday, and it stays available for 30 days. The app is for ages 13 and up, and no purchase is named for the birthday drink.
The app is central to the chain: rewards members made 73% of Dutch Bros’ transactions in the second quarter of 2026, its earnings release says.
Worth it? Yes: the 30-day window makes it the easiest coffee freebie to use. For coffee the rest of the year, see our guide to free coffee.
Chipotle: chips, guac, queso or a drink
Chipotle Rewards members pick one birthday reward: chips, guacamole, queso or a fountain drink. Since Chipotle relaunched the program in April 2026, the reward has a 30-day window, its newsroom says.
Chipotle’s rewards page names no purchase for the birthday reward, though its separate sign-up chips and guac need a $5 order. Food & Wine’s writer took small chips in August 2026 and found the choices not “all that exciting”.
Worth it? Yes if you are nearby: it is small, but you have a month to claim it.
That month is generous. Chipotle, Dutch Bros, Auntie Anne’s and Bath & Body Works give 30 days, Cinnabon and Chuck E. Cheese 14, and a Starbucks Green member or a Burger King member gets 1.

Jersey Mike’s: a free regular sub
Jersey Mike’s puts 72 Shore Points, enough for a free regular sub, into MyMike’s accounts on the birthday. Its terms set four conditions: an account, email opt-in, a birthday on file, and an earlier order with a regular or giant sub, wrap or sub bowl in the 12 months before.
Food & Wine’s writer called it “more of a buy-one, get-one deal” in August 2026. A YouTuber found it paused in February 2024, so check the app each year.
Worth it? Only for regulars: the sub you bought earlier pays for this one.
Auntie Anne’s: a free pretzel
Auntie Anne’s Rewards members get one free Original, Sweet Almond or Cinnamon Sugar pretzel for their birthday. It expires 30 days after the offer arrives.
You qualify only after spending at least $1 through your rewards account in the past 365 days. Food & Wine’s writer ranked it fifth of his six in August 2026.
Worth it? Yes, if you buy a pretzel at least once a year.
Cinnabon: a small cold brew
Cinnabon’s rewards terms list a birthday reward of one 16-ounce cold brew for Cinnabon Rewards members, valid for 14 days in the app, in store or online.
The same terms hedge: Cinnabon “might provide” a birthday reward, and may ask for a minimum time as a member or a minimum purchase first. Once you set your birthday, you cannot change it.
Worth it? Yes as a bonus, but don’t plan your day around it.
Sit-down chains give birthday desserts and meals too; our list of free birthday meals covers them.
Beauty: 3 free birthday gifts
Beauty stores give the most valuable birthday gifts. Sephora’s and Ulta’s need no purchase in store; online, both want an order.
Sephora: a free beauty gift set
Sephora Beauty Insider members at every tier get a birthday gift once a year. For 2026 the gifts come from Dr. Dennis Gross, Glossier, Tower 28 and Dae, with K18, Gisou and innisfree later in the year, or you can take 250 points instead.
The gift is free in a Sephora store or at Sephora at Kohl’s. On sephora.com you need a $25 order, while on kohls.com there is no minimum, Sephora’s January 2026 announcement says. It calls the birthday gift “the most-loved benefit” of a program with 45 million members in North America.
Joining is free at 16, or 18 in Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey, Sephora’s terms say. Reselling the gift breaks those terms.
Worth it? Yes: the best birthday gift on this list, and free in store.
Ulta Beauty: a deluxe sample or travel size
Ulta Beauty Rewards gives members a birthday gift in their birthday month, while supplies last. The choices are deluxe samples and travel sizes, such as a Benefit 24-HR Brow Setter sample or a Living Proof dry shampoo; 10 items were offered in October 2026.
In store, Ulta’s terms say no purchase is needed: show the code from the app or birthday email. Online and Pickup need an order over $0. Your birthday must be on your profile before your birthday month.
Membership is free from age 13. In the newest 1,000 Google Play reviews of Ulta’s app (April 18 to October 12, 2026), 21 mention a birthday, and 14 describe a gift or code that did not arrive or work.
Worth it? Yes. Save your birthday before the month starts, or the code won’t come.
Bath & Body Works: a free item up to $9.95
My Bath & Body Works, the chain’s free rewards program, issues a birthday reward on the birth date in your profile. It is one free item with an original price of $9.95 or less, good for 30 days.
In store, you scan the barcode in the app’s Wallet; the help center doesn’t say whether you must buy anything else. Online, you must add other merchandise, and shipping applies to the free item, its help center says. You cannot change the birthday once you have saved it.
Worth it? Yes in store; online it costs you an order and shipping.
For more beauty you can try at no cost, see our guide to free samples.
Movies: a free popcorn
AMC Theatres: a free large popcorn
AMC Stubs Insider, the free tier of AMC’s program, loads a birthday gift on the first day of your birthday month: a large popcorn, AMC’s Insider page says. It is good for one calendar month, and paid tiers add a large fountain drink.
AMC’s own pages disagree on the lead time. Its terms say a new account must be active for a calendar month first, while an FAQ says to save the birthday 30 days before your month. Gourmet popcorn is excluded.
Worth it? Yes: join a month early and it costs nothing. A Los Angeles YouTuber claimed hers in early 2026.
Kids: 2 free birthday treats
Two national brands give children a free birthday treat with no purchase named. Build-A-Bear’s famous birthday offer is a discount, not a gift (see what lists get wrong).
Chuck E. Cheese: 30 free minutes of games
The Chuck E. Cheese Birthday Club gives a child 30 free minutes of game play and free cotton candy, with no party package, fee or subscription. It is open to ages 1 through 17.
Register at least 7 days before the birthday, then show the email at any location within two weeks of when it is sent. The game time loads onto a Play Pass or Play Band from the register, which the club does not include; its page gives no price for one.
Worth it? Yes for younger kids; ask what the pass costs before you go.
Topgolf: a free kids’ meal
Topgolf’s Kids + Families email list promises a free kids’ meal on your child’s birthday. Signing up is free, and the page aims at ages 17 and under.
That is all Topgolf publishes: no age limit for the meal, no window, and nothing on whether an adult must buy something. Adults get no published birthday perk.
Worth it? Sign up if you go anyway, and ask your venue how it works.
What happened when people collected them
Reporters and video makers who did a birthday run tell the same story. The freebies are real, but each one needs an app, and some fail at the counter.
CNBC’s run shows what goes wrong. A Cold Stone coupon never arrived, and the Starbucks app showed a reward she could not open. Staff stepped in both times: Cold Stone gave 20% off, and a barista made the drink anyway.
App reviews show the same problems in 2026. We read the newest reviews of three apps and counted those that mention a birthday:
Those complaints are a small sample. On Apple’s US App Store, Dutch Bros’ app rates 4.93, Starbucks’ 4.89 from 8.4 million ratings, Sephora’s 4.88 and Ulta’s 4.86. IHOP’s rates 4.84, AMC’s 4.82, Burger King’s 4.72 and Chipotle’s, the lowest of the eight, 4.68.

Bottom line: Most birthday rewards arrive, but expect one or two to fail. Keep the code ready, and ask staff when the app won’t scan.
Birthday rewards that cost you something
Most beauty brands and almost every clothing, gift and pet store give a coupon, store credit or points instead of a gift. Each one below needs a purchase, an earlier purchase or a fee.
Clothing, gift and pet stores follow the same pattern. Their birthday “gift” is usually $5 to $10 off something you buy.
Some food rewards need a purchase too. Firehouse Subs gives a medium sub with a $1 purchase, after a $1 purchase in the 6 months before. Panera names a free You Pick Two only for MyPanera+ members, who spend $300 a year.
Bottom line: A $5 coupon saves money only on something you would buy anyway. Never shop just to use one.
Free on your birthday without signing up?
Not at a national chain. None of the 74 brands whose rules we read gives a birthday freebie for an ID alone: each needs a free account, an app or an email list. Lists of “no sign-up” freebies lean on local stores’ goodwill and on rules that have since changed.
For freebies that need no birthday at all, see our list of websites to get free stuff.
Other brands publish a birthday reward but won’t say what it is, so they are not in our count of 15:
- Krispy Kreme: “a sweet birthday gift”, valid 30 days. App Store reviewers describe a free 3-count of doughnuts.
- Chick-fil-A: “something sweet” in the app’s Rewards tab, for members 18 and over.
- Baskin-Robbins, Subway and Taco Bell: a “birthday surprise” or birthday rewards, item not named.
- Cold Stone Creamery: a reward valid from 7 days before to 7 days after the birthday.
- Dairy Queen: a “special offer”, only after a $1 order in the 45 days before.
- Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta: a gift “at our discretion”, with the birthday saved 7 business days before your month.
- Cinemark and Glossier: a “birthday surprise” and “free gifts”, unnamed.
Bottom line: The real price of a birthday freebie is a sign-up, usually a week or more ahead.
Why brands give you a free birthday treat
A birthday reward buys your visits and your data. Ulta says rewards members brought in about 95% of its sales in fiscal 2025, and its privacy policy calls its rewards “reasonably related to the value of the data you provide”.
The programs are huge. Ulta counts more than 46 million members, Sephora 45 million in the US and Canada, Starbucks 35.8 million active US members and Chipotle 21 million active members.

At its January 2026 investor day, Starbucks said Rewards drove nearly 60% of its US company-operated revenue in fiscal 2025, more than $13 billion. An executive said longer birthday windows for its best members were meant to “keep that frequency driving”.
The rewards have also grown stricter. GlobalData analyst Neil Saunders told Axios in July 2023 that birthday perks were becoming “stingier and more restrictive”.
Your birthday is part of the price. Ulta’s policy says it “sells” and “shares” personal information through analytics and advertising tools. Starbucks’ privacy notice says it does not sell data for money, but some sharing with ad partners may count as a sale under privacy laws.
Bottom line: The treat is real, and so is the trade: you give a date and your shopping habits for it.
How to collect birthday freebies without the hassle
Most failures come from timing. Each program has its own sign-up deadline and claim window, and they run from a month before your birthday to a month after.

- Start a month ahead. Join AMC Stubs Insider and save your birthday at Ulta, Gap and the rest before your month begins.
- Make the qualifying purchases. Starbucks wants one Star-earning purchase before the birthday, Jersey Mike’s a sub in the past 12 months, and Auntie Anne’s $1 in the past year.
- Use one email address for rewards. The average person holds 19 loyalty programs, the Bond Loyalty Report found in 2024, and birthday codes get buried.
- Plan a route. Put the one-day rewards, Starbucks Green and Burger King, on the birthday itself, and spread the 30-day ones over the next weeks.
- Give only what is asked. Starbucks asks for your birth month and day, not the year.
Earn gift cards for the same brands all year
A birthday freebie comes once a year. Receipt, cash-back and rewards apps pay out in gift cards and cash all year, and our guides to free Starbucks gift cards, Sephora gift cards and gift cards in general list which apps carry each.
Fetch gives points for any grocery store receipt and pays them out as gift cards. Its terms set the minimum age at the age of majority in your state, and receipts older than 14 days earn nothing.
Swagbucks pays for shopping and games, with e-gift cards from $3. MyPoints also cashes out to gift cards from $3.
Upside pays cash back at restaurants and gas stations, which suits the rest of your birthday dinner.
Which birthday freebies are worth it
Worth doing
- Sephora or Ulta in store: the biggest gift, with no purchase.
- Nothing Bundt Cakes, AMC, Dutch Bros and Chipotle: free, with a week or more to claim.
- Starbucks, if you buy there at least once a year.
- Chuck E. Cheese for kids, once you know the Play Pass price.
- Fetch, Swagbucks or Upside for gift cards and cash back the rest of the year.
Skip
- Store “birthday rewards” that are $5 off a purchase.
- Jersey Mike’s and Auntie Anne’s, unless you are already a regular.
- Beauty gifts that need a $25 to $55 order online.
- Joining 20 apps you will never open again.
How we researched this
We read the birthday rules of 74 national brands in their own terms, help pages and announcements on October 12 and 13, 2026; where a brand’s site would not load for us, we used its pages as search results show them and say so. Member counts come from the companies’ filings and releases. What happens at the counter comes from the reporters and video makers credited above, and from app reviews we read and counted.
Birthday Freebies FAQ
Can you get free stuff on your birthday without signing up?
Not from a national chain. Every one of the 74 brands we checked needs a free account, app or email list; a local shop may still give something if you ask.
What can I get free on my birthday online?
Very little ships free. Sephora’s birthday gift has no minimum on Kohls.com, Sephora says, but Ulta, Bath & Body Works and most beauty brands want an order online.
What is the Sephora birthday gift?
For 2026 it is a gift set from brands such as Dr. Dennis Gross, Glossier, Tower 28 and Dae, or 250 points. It is free in store and on kohls.com, and needs a $25 order on sephora.com.
What birthday freebies can kids get?
Chuck E. Cheese gives 30 free game minutes and cotton candy to ages 1 to 17, and Topgolf promises a free kids’ meal through its family email list. Build-A-Bear’s birthday bear costs the child’s age in dollars.
Is it safe to give companies your birthday?
It is a trade: Ulta says it uses your birthdate to identify you and that it “sells” and “shares” some data with ad partners. Give the month and day only where that is all a program asks, as at Starbucks.
