Melissa Schuman is asking a Los Angeles judge to keep medical records and deposition testimony out of the public court file in her civil case against Nick Carter.
TMZ reported that Schuman filed new court documents seeking permission to submit her medical records under seal. She is also asking the court to seal the transcript of her deposition in the case.
The former Dream singer cited alleged harassment, threats, doxxing and intimidation since she publicly accused the Backstreet Boys member of sexual assault.
Carter has denied Schuman’s allegations and maintains that their encounter was consensual.
Schuman Cites Alleged Threats and Doxxing
In the filing, Schuman alleges that her home address was previously leaked and that anonymous mail was sent to her residence. She also claims she received messages encouraging her to harm herself and faced “coordinated efforts to intimidate and discredit her.”
The court has not determined who was responsible for the alleged messages, anonymous mail or disclosure of her address. Schuman’s request to seal the records remains pending.
The Case Stems From Schuman’s 2023 Lawsuit
Schuman sued Carter and his company, Kaotic Productions, in April 2023. Her complaint alleges sexual battery, sexual assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress tied to an alleged encounter at Carter’s Santa Monica apartment in 2003.
ABC7 Los Angeles reported at the time that Schuman alleged Carter invited her to the apartment while they were working on the teen horror film The Hollow. The lawsuit claims Carter gave her a drink and sexually assaulted her.
Schuman first publicly accused Carter in 2017. Los Angeles prosecutors previously declined to file criminal charges after reviewing the allegation, citing the statute of limitations.
Carter Denies the Allegations and Has Countersued
Carter has consistently denied assaulting Schuman. People reported that in a California counterclaim filed in July 2024, Carter denied her accusations and sued her for $2.5 million, alleging defamation and interference with business relationships.
His filing alleges that Schuman made false statements that damaged his reputation, business opportunities and earning ability. TMZ reported that Carter also claims the allegations caused emotional distress for his wife and children.
Those claims remain allegations. Schuman continues to stand by her account, while Carter maintains that the encounter was consensual and that her accusations are false.
Carter Recently Filed Witness Declarations
TMZ reported in June that Carter submitted declarations from people described as witnesses who claimed they saw nothing supporting Schuman’s account on the night in question.
According to TMZ, Carter’s former roommate James “Tony” Bass claimed in testimony that he saw Carter and Schuman drinking, socializing and flirting, and that he did not observe Schuman appearing upset or distressed.
Carter’s filing also claimed Schuman’s talent agent at the time testified that Schuman described the encounter as consensual.
MyNewsLA reported that Judge Lisa K. Sepe-Wiesenfeld ordered the parties to complete mediation through an internal Superior Court service by Jan. 10, 2027. The judge also scheduled a trial date of May 10, 2027.
