Online Marketing and Racism – Bias in Tech





Can online marketing be biased and racist? Yes, easily. Even when we rely on “impartial” artificial intelligence to take the decisions. Research in 2017 found real estate agencies used Facebook ads to perpetuate racial steering and segregation. Recruiting industry is also susceptible to excluding people of colour when looking to fill out certain roles.

Even when marketing is fully automated AI is as good as we are. Machine learning is learning from…us. We create the data and we feed it in. The dangers of taking the past data into a perpetuating future of inequality and racial discrimination is scary.
