Exhibition of pictures in advertising by Shell-Mex and BP Ltd., c1938 – Edward McKnight Kauffer
A very striking item by the famous graphic designer and poster artist Edward McKnight Kauffer for Shell-Mex and BP in the late 1930s. McKnight Kauffer worked for many major clients (including London Underground) during the 1920s and ’30s – Shell-Mex and BP’s advertising was at the time under the control of one of the great advertising men, Jack Beddington. The image is a wonderful blend of a black and white image of an industrial landscape set against the artist with his palette and brush – the simple splashes of red creating both accent and link with the lettering – however the marvellous visual focus is the chimney pushing vertically through the image.
